Kettering

On the level

Brief

With a rear garden already landscaped and planted, the client was looking to develop the south-facing side garden. They wanted a space in which to appreciate the expansive sky line whilst having a quick coffee and sit down. The original garden had a large lawn, redundant tortoise garden, small patio, utility area and very little planting. The client wanted the patio to be larger but still wanted to retain some lawn. The tortoise garden was to become an area for growing vegetables and the utility area needed ‘beautifying’ so it looked less like a yard. A path incorporating a pergola walkway beside the garage was required to access the rear of the garden. The client wanted planting to be included to surround and soften boundaries.

Design

The design followed the line of the boundary and used curves to draw the eye into the garden and towards the sky line at the rear. Whilst there were no significant level changes the existing garden contained small steps which created a trip hazard. This was managed with a single step across the garden to create a subtle split level between two lawns. Sandstone setts create curved pathways which blend into the porcelain paving. Planting areas share a similar colour palette with more bold foliage and strong colours in a tropical style at the end of the garden to evoke a sense of tropical holiday, aided by the bespoke water feature. Cooler, delicate forms surround the patio.

Build

The wet weather, along with clay soil which became easily waterlogged, presented a real challenge during the clearance of this project. However, this was overcome and the garden began to take shape with the installation of the steel edging and laying of setts to create the curves. Careful workmanship was employed to continue these curves in the porcelain paving. Bespoke timber peorgola for grape vines, slatted screens, water feature and dog bath were crafted to add the final touches.

We are extremely pleased with the garden that the Bosworth’s Landscaping team has built for us. The workmanship, attention to detail and interaction from Ben and the team was exemplary throughout the whole works. There were some tough moments, mainly weather related, but good solutions were found when needed and always with a cheery smile.
