Brief
The brief for this space was to transform a small, concrete-covered back garden/driveway, into an attractive garden with planting, focal points and lots of seating. The space also included a garage/workshop that was being converted into a garden room and access to a neighbouring property that needed to be retained. The client also asked for vehicle access to be kept, so that an electric car could be parked and charged in the garden if required.
Design
The design for the garden breaks the space into different areas, so there are multiple options for cosy corners to sit close to the house and further down the garden. The neighbour’s access was moved to the far end of the garden to create more privacy for the client and give the neighbours their own designated entrance. The long and thin shape of the garden has been used to its advantage, with focal points and borders positioned to create interesting views from the house. The material choices also help to define different areas, adding texture and also creating movement around the garden.

Build
Working alongside a pavement and in a relatively small space required careful planning. Concrete had to be broken down and removed with paving before preparation of the ground began. The bricks from the boundary wall were reclaimed and used to build the party wall to great effect. The bespoke fence and gates were installed ensuring the pavement was retained in it’s existing state and large tree roots presented a challenge. Construction was carried out in the summer house in preparation for the carpenter and to create the access for the neighbour. The combination of paving, setts and gravel were installed to create the zones designed and in readiness for the customer to complete the planting.
